Top 5 Best Used Cars to Buy

Let's face it, we all love the idea of buying a new car but in today's economy it is not always possible. When you don't cover that many miles each year and with heavy depreciation rates on new cars, buying second hand is a perfect choice. So there follows a list of the best-used cars to buy based on a whole range of factors including their popularity, while others warrant a place because of their rock-solid residuals. The Vauxhall Insignia - Looked at alone, the Vauxhall Insignia is a very bold and good looking car. The build quality is very good and the driving experience is more comfortable than you would expect. However, there are a lot of these on the roads due to the fact that most Insignias are sold to fleets as company cars. But put that together with a low starting price when new means the depreciation on them is very bad. That's great news for used buyers though, the Insignia range was updated in 2013, so go for a 13 plate or newer if you can and 7000 should be enough to get you behind the wheel of a mid-range three-year-old diesel Insignia with reasonably low mileage, and this is about a third of the car's original price.

Jaguar XF - Looking for something a little more luxurious? Then you don't have to look further than the Jaguar XF! It has a class-leading interior that you will struggle to beat, a brilliant driving experience, and comes with an array of equipment, whichever model you choose. A new XF launched last year and this means the previous model has become less sought-after on the secondhand market, even though it looks very similar to the current car. 16,000 will get you the 2.2-liter diesel executive complete with wood, leather, and sat-nav as standard.

SEAT Leon - This car comes from a very competitive class but it just adds a dash of extra style compared to others along with a bit more interior space, while the driving experience is still impressively involving. Secondhand values for the Leon are good and you should expect to be able to find a 2013 model for around 8,000. Try and look out for them in Technology trim or with the Technology Pack if possible, and the 2.0-liter diesel engines or the turbocharged 1.4-liter petrol are recommended, all of which offer great performance and economy. The higher-spec models will add around 1,000 to the price of a secondhand Leon, but you'll still be looking at a 50% saving or so from what the original owner paid, which is always a bonus!

BMW Z4 - The Z4 was once a very sought-after car, but over the last few years, its popularity has dwindled, mainly because it's never been available with a diesel engine. The current Z4 comes with a folding metal hardtop which is very practical and despite the fact that production is due to stop soon, it makes a great secondhand buy if you are in the market for a two-seater sports car. The sDrive 20i or 28i are just simply thrilling to drive - and that's partly what this kind of car is about. A three-year-old sDrive18i can be yours for around 15,000 (roughly half its price when new) but if you can, spending an extra 3-4,000 for the sDrive28 adds the benefit of 0-62mph in just 5.7 seconds.

Kia Cee'd - The Cee'd is quite simply an excellent family hatchback that is competent in almost every aspect. It has a range of features that you wouldn't expect a car in its class to have, feels spacious and well built. It may not be the best car to drive in its class, but that said, it is just as at home driving around town as it is cruising quietly on the motorway. When it comes to buying secondhand there are a couple of great perks! The secondhand values aren't great with the Cee'd, so bagging a bargain won't take much work with a three-year-old diesel-only setting you back around 7,000, representing a saving of more than 50% on the car's cost when new. The best news is that Kia's seven-year (100,000-mile) warranty is fully transferable on the used car market, giving you peace of mind and saving you money on extended warranties!
